Perimenopause Weight Gain: What Actually Helps?

Have you ever caught yourself saying,

"I'm eating the same way I always have...so why is my body changing?"

If you're in your 40s or early 50s, you're definitely not alone.

One of the biggest conversations I've been having with clients lately is around perimenopause weight gain.

Many women tell me they're doing everything they used to do, but it suddenly doesn't seem to be working anymore.

The good news?

You're not imagining it.

But you're also not doomed.

Here are a few things I encourage my clients to focus on.

1. Stop Eating Less

This one surprises a lot of women.

The first instinct is often to cut more calories.

But eating too little can leave you feeling tired, hungry, and make it harder to stay consistent.

Instead of asking, "How can I eat less?" try asking, "How can I build meals that actually keep me full?"

2. Prioritize Protein

Protein becomes even more important during perimenopause.

It helps support muscle, keeps you fuller between meals, and can make meals more satisfying.

You don't have to make every meal perfect, but finding ways to include protein throughout the day can make a big difference.

3. Don't Forget Strength Training

Walking is wonderful for your health, but strength training becomes especially important during perimenopause.

Building and maintaining muscle supports overall health and can help you feel stronger as your body changes.

That doesn't mean you have to spend hours in the gym.

Even two or three strength sessions each week can be beneficial.

4. Sleep Matters More Than You Think

Poor sleep can affect hunger, cravings, energy, and motivation.

I know it's easier said than done, especially if hormones are making sleep more difficult.

But before assuming your nutrition is the problem, it's worth looking at your sleep habits too.

5. Stop Comparing Yourself to Your 30-Year-Old Self

This one is probably the hardest.

Your body is changing.

That doesn't mean you've failed.

It means your approach may need to change too.

Instead of chasing what worked ten years ago, focus on building habits that support the season of life you're in now.

So What Actually Works?

I wish I could tell you there was one perfect food or one magic supplement.

There isn't.

What I see work time and time again is consistency.

Eating balanced meals.

Including protein.

Strength training.

Managing stress.

Getting enough sleep.

And giving yourself grace while your body is changing.

Perimenopause doesn't mean you have to give up on your health goals.

It just means your strategy may need to evolve.

If you're feeling frustrated and don't know where to start, you don't have to figure it out alone.
